The pressure of finding the right kind of volunteer opportunity to support your passions can be a challenge. Several ways to get the most out of travel and volunteer abroad programs include:

  1. Meeting all your travel requirements

What you bring on your trip is up to you. Our advice is to keep in mind that you’ll be moving around, so remember to prioritize traveling with ease. We recommend that you be APT when it comes to applying, preparing, and traveling for your volunteer abroad program.

The next step towards getting ready for your adventure is booking your flights. We can help you find the right flight to get you to camp or connect you with our partners at SkyLink for assistance. Where to Travel and Volunteer Abroad

When it comes to deciding on where to travel and volunteer abroad, there are so many exciting options to consider. From 2005 to 2022, Europe continuously took the lead in tourism with over 500 million travelers reported in 2022. Meanwhile, Africa and Asia Pacific areas had only 150 million tourists in the same year.

If you’re someone who is looking for a meaningful travel experience then going somewhere unfamiliar is the perfect option. For people who are interested in traveling with a purpose, we recommend the following destinations when considering where to travel and volunteer abroad:

  1. Bali
  2. Thailand

How to Make an Impact Through Volunteer and Travel Abroad Opportunities

Regardless of which location you choose, volunteer and travel abroad programs offer a diverse range of opportunities to make a difference. To travel with purpose, you need to connect with organizations that are doing important volunteer work across the world.

At Further Travel, we help you see the world and make a difference. Opportunities to volunteer and travel abroad encourage you to look deeper at the destinations you’re visiting and positively affect the communities you’re staying in. You’ll connect with local NGOs to do important volunteer work and make a profound impact. In this section, we’ll cover the types of organizations Further Travel will connect you with during your volunteer and travel abroad program, including:

  1. Animal conservation groups
  2. Environmental projects
  3. Social initiatives.

Gain meaningful experiences during travel abroad programs and connect with companies that are mission-driven and making a difference. Your contribution to these programs is what makes your adventure purposeful and engaging. Let’s delve into the types of animal conservation initiatives you’ll get involved in during your volunteer and travel abroad experience.

Make a Difference in Animal Conservation

If you’re an animal lover, Further Travel’s array of animal conservation projects is sure to fire you up! Do important volunteer with incredible people, and make a difference in the lives of creatures great and small through the following initiatives:

Rescue P.A.W.S.

Further Travel’s Rescue P.A.W.S. in Thailand is one of our most popular animal conservation initiatives. This stray dog program relies on volunteers to assist with vaccinations, sterilizations, walks, and preparing dogs to be adopted. Not to mention lots of love and cuddles!

Elephant Sanctuaries

Across Phuket and Kanchanaburi, Further Travel’s itineraries connect you to organizations focused on elephant care. Learn about the elephant's history in Thailand, and why they’re such protected creatures, and then get up close and personal! Your volunteer and travel opportunities will let you meet, feed, and care for these gentle giants. Prepare fruit, vegetables, and sticky rice balls as tasty treats, then take the elephants down to the river for a bath where you’ll give them a good scrub.

Turtle Conservation

During your stay in Bali, you’ll get to know the local reptiles as you assist in feeding the turtles, cleaning enclosures, and completing beach cleans. Get involved in environmental education programs and repairing animal education displays as part of your contribution to the turtle conservation program at Serangan.

The Big Five

One of our biggest animal conservation volunteer and travel programs is Camp South Africa Animal Conservation. This action-packed two-week program covers a wide range of responsibilities for the everyday animal lover. Conservation tasks may vary from physical volunteering to interesting and interactive lecture-based content surrounding the life and history of a range of South African wildlife. No day is ever the same at Camp South Africa Animal Conservation! Be sure to have an open mind and enjoy the unique ways to travel and volunteer abroad with this immersive wildlife-focused experience.

Do Important Volunteering Through Environmental Projects

At Further Travel, we make it our mission to give back to the planet as much as possible during our volunteer and travel abroad programs. Our eco volunteers contribute to the locations they visit through a variety of environmental projects, including:

  1. Beach cleans
  2. Tree planting
  3. Reef conservation efforts
  4. Food planting

Our Vietnam & Cambodia Camp prioritizes beach cleaning as part of the 20-day trip with volunteers picking up trash along the beaches of Hoi An to help mitigate ocean pollution.

During Camp Maldives, your volunteer and travel abroad program will focus on volunteering with local organizations to assist in environmental conservation efforts. Work with Save the Beach in VilimalĂ© where you’ll conduct reef surveys, plant coral, and assess coral health. In addition to volunteering with Save the Beach, you will also help to plant coconut palms.

While visiting elephants in sanctuaries, you and your fellow travelers will be encouraged to plant food such as banana trees and sugarcane that the elephants can continue to enjoy for years to come.

Assist Powerful Social Initiatives

Working within local communities, such as in schools and education centers, is another great benefit to volunteer and travel abroad programs. During your adventures, you’ll get to know students that you’ll connect with as you teach English, coach sports, and do creative projects with them.

South Africa

Our Camp South Africa Sports Coaching & Teaching is our longest social initiative-focused volunteer and travel program. We assist with two main schools in the townships of the local village—a conventional primary school and a school for those with special needs. You’ll be involved in helping with Math and English to slow and fast-learning children in grades 4, 5, 6, and 7. It’s an exciting way to make an impact on local kids and support their education over the course of 5 weeks.

Bali

During your time in Bali, one of the ways you’ll give back is by getting involved in teaching classes or helping with activities. This can include painting, gymnastics, or whatever else is going on in the local learning center. In Ubud, you’ll spend part of your travel and volunteer program teaching English in local schools for up to 3 days.

Thailand

Get to know the local children in Chiang Mai as you volunteer to teach English at the local school. You’ll spend your morning planning lessons and games and then head to the schools in the afternoon. Meanwhile, some of our other programs in Phuket are a little more involved. Make regular visits to the school during the first week of your trip and spend 3 hours each day teaching. It’s a highly rewarding way to connect to the community!
